Tincture, an odd word indeed. I bet in all your time smoking you have never sat around with your pals passing around a tiny vial of cannabis liquid. I know it’s not the most popular way to consume your weed, it is one of the most potent ways and delivers soothing effects in a very short amount of time.
I cannot wrap my brain around why people haven’t caught on to the magical powers of tinctures yet. My goal here is to shed some light on this miracle substance so you can stop missing out.
No, cannabis tinctures are not so social, but they do pack a bunch of benefits that a person who wants to reap can without having to smoke, without making a scene, or who doesn’t want the sugars and carbs from other forms of edibles.
Tinctures are easy to make, won’t stink up your kitchen with the smell of weed, are discrete, and are amazing for making those tough to create edibles like marijuana infused candy and drinks. They are also easier to dose than say a cookie because the effects wear off and take action much faster than other methods of consumption.
Tinctures are mostly used as a reliable and easy way to deliver medical marijuana does because the alcohol in the tincture allows the weed to be absorbed quickly into your bloodstream.
Personally, tinctures will leave you feeling much more alert and your thoughts much clearer as opposed to a giant hit from the bong or one too many weed cookies. Use a weed tincture If you need daytime treatment for your ailments, or you have a lot of tasks on your plate and need to stay focused: a tincture made from weed is your friend, indeed.
How stoked are you to know about tinctures now?
Probably the best thing I can boast about weed tinctures is that, when made and stored correctly, the compounds in your herb like THC, terpenes, flavonoids, and CBD are retained and persevered which means they hold on to their potency for a very very long time-decades.
I can’t tell you how excited I am about tinctures. Call me obsessed. I think you should be too. You will learn about the different tincture methods and recipes so you can make your own. The main three are pure grain alcohol (also known as Green Dragon), vodka or brandy medium, and last but certainly not least the non-alcohol vegetable glycerin route.
Knowing the benefits of tinctures and the way it differs from other methods of consumption is equally as important. Basically, to shed light on this miracle potion and show you how easily you can reap the benefits is my ultimate goal.
Since edibles became mainstream a lot more folks are hoping on the marijuana bandwagon. Small amounts of weed infused oil or butter can hit you hard, making you wonder how you are ever going to get off your couch or out of bed. Yes, eating cannabis infused foods is a great way to treat physical pain but it can knock you hard with even the tiniest bite.
Everyone is different and for me I get overwhelmed, distracted, and sometimes confused if I venture out into the public realm after consuming edibles. However, some people are very social and love being out in the world. I choose a tincture for during the day and save the sugar-coated carbs for when I am at home for the night.
Because changing your dose with a tincture is simple and the effects wear off quite fast, tinctures are the best route when you are experiencing a lot of pain and can’t afford to take some down time from your busy schedule.
Simply put: you get more marijuana for the money. Because you are not incinerating your weed, killing off the beneficial components of it with a lighter, tinctures allow you to retain all the medicinal compounds giving you a faster more effective result than smoking.
Vaping is a great alternative to smoking and is quite convenient if you have a portable device, but if you are a classic toker, tinctures are a great addition to your treatment plan because they are much more discreet and travel-friendly as opposed to hauling around your papers, bong, lighter, grinder, and of course your weed.
Even an Indica based tincture will leave you feeling less groggy and more uplifted instead of smoking it. There is no science that proves this theory, but I find that when you use even a highly potent tincture, you are not couch-locked as you would be if you smoked a highly potent strain.
This is a fancy phrase that means administer the tincture under your tongue and hold it there until (small membranes in your mouth) your body absorbs it. This method works extremely fast and effective.
This is a step you take before you get into actually making your tincture. Don’t forget to do this if you want the highest possible THC content. The NOVA Decarboxylator turns all of the THCA from your plant to THC without losing a single bit. This step is important for potency properties.
The hot method is used commonly in conjunction with the Green Dragon tincture method. It is one of the fastest ways to make your weed tincture.
There are some extra things you need if you are going to use this method and on top of all that, you need to be alert and focused on the task at hand because you will be working with a high proof alcohol.
1. Start by preheating your oven to 325 degrees F as you would if you were going to back chocolate chip cookies. Grind up your weed as finely as possible. Place your cut up weed on a cookie sheet and bake in your oven until your home fills with the sweet smell of cannabis, or about five minutes. Finally, grab a mason jar and fill it with your herb and a high proof alcohol. This last step is a common denominator between all methods.
2. Now create a water bath, like you would if you were melting chocolate for baking. If you have a double broiler, go you! If you’re like me and do not, place your jar in a pan and fill the pan with about an inch and a half of water.
Note: Do not get water in your tincture mixture-it will ruin
3. While the water starts to boil ensure you are in ventilated area. Have your kitchen fan on and a window cracked in order to remove any combustible fumes the alcohol produces. Next, grab your thermometer and make sure your water temp reaches 165 degrees F. Your mixture should not boil at this temp. If it does, turn down the heat a notch.
4. Now that the mixture has reached the ideal temp, grab your potholders and remove the jar from your double broiler. Place it down in a safe place and let the jar cool Once it is cool enough for you to handle it, strain your tincture into a new dish to separate the plant matter from your brew.
You are done! Once your super powerful potion has cooled, pour it into a small dropper vial for daily use.
Side Note: The best uses for this method is in making candies, lollipops, drinks and even spiking your coffee as it has a high potency level in a very small dose which doesn’t affect consistency in cooking recipes
This is the easiest way to get your brew on! This style is like a cheesecake, requires absolutely any baking and tastes like heaven on earth! If I can do this, you can do this-trust me.
Here’s how technical this method is: Mix ingredients together. Set it aside. Voila!
1. First, break up your weed into smaller pieces and place it into a mason jar. Add as much or as little as you like.
2. Next, pour in just enough high-proof alcohol to just cover the top of your herb.
I am no scientist by any means. For every gram of cannabis I use, I want roughly one fluid ounce of high-proof alcohol. Most people use Everclear and I am one of them. Don’t get caught up in the herb-to-alcohol ratio just ensure all the plant material is covered.
3. Screw the lid on and start shaking like nobody’s business for a solid two minutes then place your jar in the freezer. This is where it is going to live for about five days. During the stay in your freezer, be sure to remove your jar and give it a good shake. Do this twice a day for the five days and you will see all your weed dissolve.
The jar won’t shatter in your freezer because alcohol has a lower freezing point than water, which means your tincture will stay liquid the entire time it chills in your freezer.
After shaking and storing your weed tincture in the freezer, you’re essentially done. Just strain your super potion through a tea strainer, silk screen, cheesecloth, or anything really into a bowl. Rid yourself of your sogged-out cabbage and place your tincture in a small; dropper bottle.
You have just learned the secret to making your own cannabis tincture. There is really nothing to it.
A long, long time ago, in a place very close to home, people from far and wide used cannabis tinctures to provide the right dosage for ailments. This was long before prohibition came and banning weed and making it very hard to get medicine.
When you are considering taking an edible over a tincture, I can’t say one is better than the other. They both play a very different and effective role in using marijuana to treat your upsets.
Always remember to hold the drops for about 30 seconds to ensure your tincture has absorbed into the sublingual membranes under your tongue. This will give you a satisfactory body high while maintaining clear thoughts and the ability to not want to stay on your couch all day.
Tinctures are making a comeback today and they are better than ever! Making your tincture is very simple and inexpensive, but you can find them at most dispensary if you don’t have the means to make your own. Although, if you are going to take the DIY approach, I would recommend the cold method first as it takes the least amount of effort and time.
